Talks and lessons
This is the agent’s deck as it came out: 10 slides, unedited. The company and numbers are fictional; the request was written the way people send them, with the notes pasted in.
“I'm doing a talk at a local mobile dev meetup about what we learned moving our app from polling to push notifications.”
I'm doing a talk at a local mobile dev meetup about what we learned moving our app from polling to push notifications. 12 slides max. It's a technical crowd. Notes: - Before: the app polled our server every 30 seconds for new messages. - After: push notifications (FCM on Android, APNs on iOS), with a fallback poll every 15 minutes. - Battery: 22% less battery used by our app in a one-week test on 40 devices. - Server requests down 70%. - Median delivery delay: about 1.2 seconds with push, against up to 30 seconds with polling. - Problem: about 3% of Android devices never got pushes because of aggressive battery savers from some manufacturers. That's why we kept the 15-minute fallback poll. - Still open: we don't fully understand iOS's limits on background work for our case. - What I'd tell others: keep a fallback, measure battery before and after, and test on the cheap phones your users actually have.
In our blind test, the reviewer would send this deck as it is and flagged nothing. Guide to lesson slides.
